February 9th, 2010 Textonyms

I got a text message that said :

“Ikea does a talent meal offer, just in case you were struggling for ideas!”

… I didn’t quite get the whole ‘talent’ offer and since I love Ikea food much more than the next guy – I decided to find out if it was meant to be something else.  I figured that ‘talent’ might have been a Textonym for something awesome.

So,  I downloaded a BNC word frequency list (unigrams I guess?) from here (all.num.gz).

Discarded the word counts (all I want is the ordering) :

   cat all.num | sed 's/\([^ ]*\) \([^ ]*\) .*/\2/' > list

Then piped it into a simple java class (see below) to give me the words it could have been :

cat list | java Textonyms talent

…turns out it was supposed to be either “talent” or “valent”.  I just realised a minute ago (by the autosuggest on google) that ‘valent’ was probably meant to be ‘valentines’.  Which totally makes sense!

My lovely ex-girlfreind is suggesting that I go to Ikea for valentines day!.. Fantastic!(?)
